Rui Oliveira
I am a professor at the Department of Informatics of the University of Minho (UMinho) and a researcher at the Institute for Systems and Computer Engineering, Technology and Science (INESC TEC).
I graduated in Electrical and Computer Engineering at the University of Porto. I completed an MSc. in Computer Science at the University of Minho and a PhD in Computer Science at the École Polytechnique Fédérale de Lausanne (2000). I obtained the Agregação degree from the University of Minho in 2017.
I joined the University of Minho as a teaching assistant in 1992. I became an assistant professor in 2000 and an associate professor in 2003. At the Department of Informatics, I teach operating systems, distributed systems, and dependable computing at the graduate and post-graduate levels, and I have supervised 16 MSc. and 10 PhDs.
I am a member of the Board of Directors of INESC TEC, national co-director of the UT Austin Portugal program and appointed Minho Advanced Computing Centre director and Portuguese expert to the EuroHPC JU governing board.
My research interests and contributions focus on scalable, dependable, and privacy-preserving data management systems, namely clustered databases and cloud storage and file-sharing services. Centred on these topics, I have published over 100 research papers and coordinated several national and European research and innovation projects, of which the FP6 GORDA project on open database replication, the H2020 SafeCloud project on secure processing in the Cloud, and the FCT STAYAWAY COVID project on decentralised privacy-preserving proximity tracing.
