Carlos Alves
Carlos Francisco Alves has a five-year bachelor's degree (licenciatura), master's and doctorate (PhD) in economics, with habilitation in management, from the Faculty of Economics of the University of Porto, where he is a professor and has taught and supervised various subjects in finance, ethics and corporate governance, microeconomics and industrial and organisational economics, in undergraduate, postgraduate, master's and doctoral courses. He is also a researcher at CEF.UP. In terms of university management, he is a member of the Scientific Council of the Faculty of Economics of the University of Porto, and Director of the Degree in Management, having also served as Chairman of the Academic Board of Porto Business School and Director of the Doctorate in Management of the Faculty of Economics. Carlos F. Alves is currently vice-chairman of SEDES - Association for Economic and Social Development.
He was honoured with the "Best Economics, Computer Science and Management Student" award by Banco Totta & Açores, the "Banco de Portugal" award by the bank of the same name and the "Eng. António de Almeida" award by the Eng. António de Almeida Foundation.
In terms of research areas, he has worked primarily on studying institutional investor behaviour, corporate governance, corporate social responsibility and sustainability, the banking system and the equilibrium of financial markets. He is the author of more than a hundred publications, including books, book chapters, working papers and scientific articles, including publications in the following journals: Corporate Governance: an International Review, Journal of Air Transport Management, Applied Financial Economics, European Accounting Review, Journal of Transport Economics and Policy, Portuguese Economic Journal, Economics and Business Letters, Research in International Business and Finance, Applied Economics Letters, Applied Economics, Corporate Communications: An International Journal, European Journal of Finance, Corporate Governance, International Journal of Energy Sector Management, Studies in Economics and Finance, Finance Research Letters and Journal of Banking Regulation. He has also presented more than three dozen studies at international scientific conferences.
He was also a Porto Stock Exchange Research Office member and Director of the Capital Markets Institute. He was also Assistant to the Secretary of State for the Treasury and Finance in the 13th Constitutional Government. He was also Chairman of the Supervisory Committee of the National Statistics Institute and Vice-Chairman of the Euronext PSI Index Management Committee. He was also a member of the committee that drew up the White Paper on Corporate Governance in Portugal and was one of its co-authors. He was also a member of the Board of the Portuguese Institute of Corporate Governance and a director of the Portuguese Association of Financial Analysts.
Between 2008 and 2016, he was a member of the CMVM's Board of Directors (a role he also held between 1998 and 2000), was Chairman of the Committee for Economic and Markets Analysis (CEMA) of the European Securities and Markets Authority (ESMA) and was a member of ESMA's Board of Supervisors and the General Board of the European Systemic Risk Board (ESRB). More recently, he was a director of Banco Montepio, serving on the Audit Committee, Risk Committee, Corporate Governance Committee and Remuneration, Appointments and Evaluation Committee.
